Renovated in 2021 following a collaboration between Foot Locker, the NBA, Basketball England and the Hoopsfix Foundation, Clapham Common basketball courts aim to set the standard for what outdoor basketball facilities should look like in the UK.
The space features one full size FIBA regulation basketball court, two half courts, perspex backboards and spring-loaded rings, bleacher seating for 250, height adjustable baskets, flood lights, and an art-design concept developed by Peter Simmons from brand and marketing agency, 5or6.
The court was renovated as part Foot Locker’s ongoing basketball community program ‘Raise the Game’, where they support and fund local basketball networks and organisations that are invested in driving change within their communities.
Clapham joined The Baltizone in Paris, Via Lazio in Milan, and Poblenou in Barcelona as courts that have undergone a renovation, with fresh designs and upgraded hoops.
The Hoopsfix Foundation, whose mission it is to grow and raise the profile of basketball in the United Kingdom, is using Clapham as a pilot project and hoping to inspire others across the country to renovate their own local courts.
Following the launch of Clapham Common basketball courts, the Foundation has released a 5,000 word guide on how to renovate your local basketball court, and will be facilitating playing opportunities around the court with the launch of this website and associated Discord community.
The Foundation, in conjunction with Basketball England, will be funding a MRes student at the University of Gloucester in the 2022/23 academic year to study the impact renovated basketball courts can have on their communities.
Since launching, Clapham Common basketball courts have received national attention, including the below video feature that aired on Sky Sports, during their weekly NBA Heat Check show.
